She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas, (formerly of Isle Magee, North Ireland) in whose arms may she be dancing once again. She also did household cleaning, working up until a couple of years ago. Flossie enjoyed bowling and going to bingo. She loved her family dearly, especially all her grandchildren. | 443 | BUCHANAN, Beverly Roy \'Bev\' Age 71 of Hantsport, passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at home. Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Roy and Mabel (Bell) Buchanan. Bev was raised in Kentville and attended Kings County Academy (up on the hill). In his younger years, he was active in many sporting activities including golf, hockey and baseball, playing with the Kentville Wildcats and later coaching ball for the Hantsport Minor League. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Dominion Atlantic Railway as a Relief Station Agent and then transferred to Saint John, N.B., working with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He then joined J. D. Irving Sawmill Division, where he was in charge of transportation. This led to his eventual position with Canadian Keyes Fibre, Hantsport, as Traffic Manager, from where he retired. Born May 6, 1926 in Hantsport, Hants Co., he was the son of the late Earl and Jessie (Beckwith) Burgess. Charles was a gifted carpenter and was mostly self-employed. His Burgess Baby Barns, tables and lawn furniture, swinging chairs, and household carpentry were beautiful. He loved his family, nature, cats and cribbage. He was a character who loved to make people laugh. Darren’s family was very important to him and he adored and loved his niece and nephew. | 446 | Burt Alonzo Schofield, passed away peacefully early on Saturday, February 6, 2021. Born in Windsor Forks on June 12, 1936, he was the son of the late Aubrey and Evelyn (Tracey) Schofield. Burt was a carpenter by trade and by hobby. He was also an avid yard sale and flea market attendee with a collection that is both eclectic and extensive. He was a devoted gardener with a very green thumb and loved to share the bounty of his gardens and fruit trees with family and friends. In years past, he enjoyed hunting, four wheeling and going to his camp. His love of hunting may have led to his collection of deer antlers, that has been admired by so many. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Rolfe); brothers Harley, Douglas, Carl, Earl, Ervin and Milton; sisters Myrna, Madeline and Helen. The family would like to thank the staff of Unit 500 at the Hants Community Hospital for their care and kindness over the past few months. | 448 | CALDWELL (Cochrane), Eleanor Maxine Age 91, of Hantsport. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our beloved mother on May 4, 2019, surrounded by her seven children and extended family members. Born April 16, 1928, to the late Aileen and Murray Cochrane in Sweets Corner, Mum was a remarkable woman with a great sense of independence and capability throughout her entire life. She kept her great sense of humour, even during her last days. She was very well respected by all who knew and loved her. She was very proud of her large family and her home on School Street, where she lived for nearly seventy years. She spent many happy years at the camp beside the river in Bishopville. In later years, she enjoyed travelling, going on many trips with her close-knit friends known as \'The Golden Girls\', and later with her companion, George, throughout Canada. She loved watching the Hantsport Shamrocks play ball from her deck which was affectionately known as the \'Sky Box\' and was usually filled with family and friends. She was a lifelong bingo player and, in recent years, she and Donnie played weekly tv bingo. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards and following curling. She was an active member and past president of Hantsport Elders Group. She retired from CKF Inc. after 26 years, where she enjoyed and respected the people and friendships she made while working there. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Chauncey \'Duke\' Caldwell; son-in-law, Larry Vaughan; special companion, George Scott; stepfather, Gerald Spence; stepmother, Merle Cochrane; sisters, Beulah (Roley) Phillips, Norma (Elston Thomas) (Mert) Tracey, Verna (Reid) Fletcher, Margaret (Toot) Cochrane; brother, Brian Spence. | 451 | Cameron Randolph Porter, 70, of Port Williams, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2023, in Valley Hospice. Cameron was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia to the late Donald and Dorothy Porter. He grew up in Hantsport and attended schools in Hantsport and Windsor. Cameron graduated from Acadia University in 1978 with a degree in Business Administration. He began an articling position with Touche Ross, but after eighteen months decided he enjoyed accounting and not auditing. Cameron worked for MAI Canada Ltd., in Dartmouth as a computer programmer before moving to Ontario where he worked for a variety of companies. Over time he worked up to a Senior Systems Analysist position, eventually starting his own business. In 1995 he returned home, continuing to work with several clients in Ontario until 2010 when he "retired". He worked on local farms, for several years, a job he enjoyed. Cameron was a member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir and was treasurer for many years. Family-only interment will be held at Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Cameron’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the medical personnel who assisted him at various times over the past year and all those who visited during his time at home. | 452 | CAMPBELL (MacPherson), Myrtle Frances Age 88, of Stanley, Hants Co., passed away peacefully in Melville Lodge, Halifax, on December 20, 2013. Born on October 29, 1925 and raised in Windsor, she was the youngest child of the late Alexander and Blanche (Herring) MacPherson. After graduating from Windsor Academy, Myrtle taught school for one year in Greenhill and then entered the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing, New Glasgow, where she graduated in 1949 as a Registered Nurse. In 1950, she married W. Glen Campbell of Stanley and together they raised seven children. Myrtle was active in both church and community. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Women’s Institute, ACW, the alter guild of St. Stephen’s, the parish choir, and was a canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Her involvement in her community often reflected the interests and activities of her children - Sunday school, church youth groups, and 4-H. She was the anchor that held a busy, and often chaotic, household together. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Glen, in 2000, and siblings, Walter, Murray, Ralph, Owen, Elmer, Mildred Covert, Helen Noiles and Edith Forsyth. | 453 | Campbell, Graham Dugald, 77, of Bible Hill, Truro. It is with sadness, the family of Graham Campbell announces his passing on Thursday, May 20th, 2021 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Halifax, NS. Graham was a son of the late John (Jock) and Jean Campbell (Murray). In his younger years, Graham spent time with his family in Hantsport, Weymouth, and Lahave. He loved being by the ocean and would take any opportunity to be on the water. He found a love for riding horses in his teenage years with the Halifax Bengal Lancers. During his time with the Lancers, he travelled to Ottawa for national performances and performed for the Queen during her visit to Halifax. Graham was a member of the Halifax Antique Car Club and refurbished a Model T-Ford. Graham was a military reservist with the Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) branch in Halifax and volunteered with the Bedford Fire Department. Graham moved to Truro early in his career to settle with his young family. Graham developed many long-lasting friendships during his years in Truro and was a dedicated member of First United Church. Graham’s true work and labour of love was found in his 55 year affiliation with the many organizations of the Masonic Order. Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, Masonic Lodge Truro 43, Philae Shriners Halifax Clown Unit, Royal Arch Chapter in Truro and Central Shrine Club. As a young boy, during his summer months in Hantsport, he participated in his first parade as a clown and later in life further enhanced his skills as “Beeper” the Clown at the Northeast Clown Institute in Plymouth, MA. His work with the Shriners Clown Unit was his true passion. He was very well known throughout Nova Scotia and would never miss a parade. Graham loved to make people happy, especially the little ones, whose smiles fueled his joy for life. Whether it was through Beeper in parades and birthday parties, or helping as Santa at holiday functions. Graham spread joy with his pleasant demeanour, his jokes, and his red nose. The family would like to thank Rev. Valerie Kingsbury for her endless support, the strong and supportive Palliative Care Team, the caregivers from Nurse Next Door who were so kind and gentle, and the VON who were involved in Graham’s care. Cremation has taken place. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions and public health guidelines, a Celebration of Life and Masonic Service will be planned for a later date. | 454 | Canadian industrialist Roy Adelbert Jodrey, DCL, LLD, Hantsport, died Sunday morning in Halifax. He was 84. Born in White Rock, Kings County, he was a son of the late Joseph P. and Annie (Hartington) Jodrey. A son of a cabinet maker, Mr. Jodrey began his business career growing and exporting apples from the Annapolis Valley. With others, he built hydro-electric power plants at White Rock and for several years was managing director of Avon River Power Co. Ltd. He established Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co. Ltd. in 1927. and Canadian Keyes Fibre Co., Ltd. in 1933. His business interests extended from Newfoundland to South America. During his lifetime Mr. Jodrey was director and vice-president of many Canadian companies, and in 1959 held the distinction of sitting on more company boards then any man in Canada. At the time of his death he was an honorary-director of the Bank of Nova Scotia, Crown Life Insurance Co., Minas Basin Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. and Canadian Keyes Fibre Co. Ltd. During his business career, Mr. Jodrey was president of Minas Basin Pulp and Paper Co. Ltd. until 1969, and Canadian Keyes Fibre Co. Ltd. He was vice-president of Eastern Chartered Trust Company and director of Canadian Cement Co. Ltd., Fraser Companies Ltd., Nova Scotia Light and Power Co. Ltd. until 1969, Algoma Central Railways companics, Hawker Siddeley Canada Ltd., Dominion Steel and Coal Corp. Ltd., until 1957 and also Dominion Coal Co. Ltd. Although Mr. Jodrey left school at 13, he made a major contribution to higher education in Nova Scotia. In 1969 he donated $250,000. each, to Dalhousie University and Acadia University to establish a chair of business administration at Dalhousie and the Roy A. Jodrey chair in science at Acadia. When Mr. Jodrey made the two donations, Dr. J. M. R. Beveridge of Acadia, said “he (Mr. Jodrey) has demonstrated in clear and unequivocal manner his high régard for universities." Mr. Jodrey received a doctor of civil law from Acadia in 1963. In 1964 he donated 400 acres of land for a provincial park in the Cape Blomidon district in the Annapolis Valley for a public park. The park was officially opened Friday. Mr. Jodrey was chosen as the Annapolis Valley’s Man of The Year in 1965. During the ceremony he told Valley residents that “people have got to work hard.” He urged them to save their money and put it to use in the Annapolis Valley. “Don't send it all out of the Valley to keep places outside. Use it to develop land and industry here, not to build up Ontario, the rest of Canada and the United States. There’s hardly anything like the Annapolis Valley in the word,” he said at the time. In the same year he was honored when the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay Railway Company, of which Mr. Jodrey was once a director, named a Great Lakes vessel, the MV Roy A. Jodrey. Mr. Jodrey was made an honorary member of the Nova Scotia Fruitgrowers Association in 1960. During the presentation he was described as one of Canada’s most outstanding financial figures. In 1957 he opposed the taking over of Dosco by the A. V. Roe of Canada Corporation, following his rejection from the board of directors of Dosco. He said that as a Nova Scotian, he wanted continuance of control by interests concerned with using raw materials — coal and ore — produced in the Atlantic area. Mr. Jodrey is survived by his wife, the former Lena Isabel Coldwell; a son, John Joseph and two daughters, Florence (Mrs. L. G. Bishop), Hantsport and Jean (Mrs. D. S. Hennigar) of Sheffield Mills. The remains are resting at Lohnes’ Funeral Home, Windsor. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Hantsport United Baptist Church. Rev. Gordon Gower will officiate. | 460 | Captain Peleg Holmes 3rd. Born 1785 at Yarmouth N.S. married 1st 1806, Mary Trefry, 2nd married Mary Lockhart of Horton. When he removed to Halfway River with his wife and family, in 1820 they brought 8 children with them. In 1821 he bought land from Peter Coalfleet and Sam Beckwith, and settled in Lower Horton. When the Baptist Church was organized in 1830 he was ordained Deacon. Thereafter, he was generally addressed as Deacon or Deacon Peleg Holmes. His house was just across the Horton-Falmouth Township line, on the Bluff Road. He resided there all of his life. Peleg died December 3rd. 1856. | 461 | Captain Ray C. RILEY — Hantsport Of Hantsport, passed away peacefully May 30, 2022, at home, as he would have wished. He lived most of his 93 years in his family home except for a few years in Liverpool during the war when his father worked for Mersey Paper. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Stella (Taylor); sister, Irma Ouellette; and wife, Jean (Silver). Ray loved playing baseball and hockey in his youth and was avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. He was pleased to know grandson, Reagan, shared his love of baseball and enjoyed hearing the stories of his games, both baseball and hockey. Ray was a volunteer fireman for the Hantsport Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and all manners of carpentry and construction. He always had a project on the go and enjoyed lending a hand to others. When Ray was not on land, he was at sea. At 17, he went on what was envisioned to be a single trip and it turned into a 55 year career sailing almost exclusively for Gypsum Transportation Limited, with short stint as Captain of the Otis Wack in Hantsport. During his career he earned a Master Mariner (Foreign Going) license and held a Pilot’s License for the Bras d’Or Lakes (Little Narrows). He took command of new ships direct from the shipyards in Ontario, Germany, and Korea but spent the majority of this career plying the sea to and from various ports between the Eastern Seaboard and the Caribbean, always returning home to his family in Hantsport. In 2010 he was on board a barge in the Avon River, bringing a church from Walton to the Avondale dock. He later commented that his last job was “delivering a church with Capt. Stanley Lord”. “A fine, sturdy ship to sail in. And revered old shipmates to crew. And with an angel riding the Masthead And Land, now long out of view”. Born on March 29, 1930, in Centre Burlington, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Ralph Mann Card and Mary Eulalie (Nunn) Card. Kaye was formerly employed for over 25 years in the office at CKF Inc., Hantsport, until she retired. Previously, she had also worked at Stephens & Yeaton’s Auto Dealership, Windsor. She enjoyed travelling, playing cards and loved gardening and most of all visiting and keeping in contact with her many friends. Kaye is survived by many cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, James Card (February 29, 2012) and a brother in infancy, Lockhart Card. Born in Avondale, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Manson and Irene (Boyd) Sanford. Throughout her working career, she had been employed in retail sales and had owned and operated a confectionary store in Hantsport. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society of Avonport and was a Brownie leader. She played the organ for many years in Avonport and Hantsport churches as well as school concerts and was an accompanist for the Kings County Music Festival. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett Carey; daughter, Janis Reeves; stepdaughter, Mauretia Dunfield; stepsons, Orren and Earl; sister, Fredia Andrews; brothers, Avon, Morien and Oris; grandson, Bill Carey. | 464 | Carl William SALTER — Falmouth Age 87, of Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2023, at home. Born April 28, 1936, in Hantsport, he was a son of the late William and Doris “Pauline” (Dill) Salter. Carl was a proud 27-year veteran firefighter of Hantsport Fire Department. He loved snowmobiling, Thursday night bowling league in New Minas, horses and attending exhibitions. Carl spent 22 years at CKF Inc., followed by 20 years as a Postal Clerk in Hantsport. His favourite day of the year was Hantsport’s Canada Day celebrations. Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his first wife, the former Nancy Swan; son, David; sister, Maxine (George) Tucker; granddaughter, Allison (Salter) Holthoff; and second wife, Maureen. Thank you to the Ivy Meadows staff for the care they provided Carl. | 465 | Carleton Vern Schofield, 89 of Lockhartville, passed away March 16, 2020 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. He was the son of the late Arch and Clara (Croft) Schofield. Carleton worked at the Minas Basin Pulp & Power for over 20 years, he also worked in carpentry until his retirement. Carleton also took pride in coaching, male and female, tug-of-war teams. He received much recognition from the province of Nova Scotia and his teams won many trophies. Carleton absolutely loved the outdoors and had many hobbies and he enjoyed his time fishing and hunting, which took top priorities. He also took pleasure in archery and bowling. Carleton was an excellent woodsman and outdoorsman, and he taught his skills to many. He was devoted to his family and friends, and known as Gramps or Pupa. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, Carleton was predeceased by his beloved wife Madeline, February 9, 2020; sisters Eileen and Myril; brothers Clarence and Keith. | 468 | Cecil Deal Wile, 90, Middleton, NS passed away peacefully on January 16, 2013. Born in Mount Denson, N.S. on July 20, 1922, he was a son of the late Willard and Bessie (Deal) Wile. Cecil was an avid gardener and well known exhibitor of vegetables. Cecil joined the R.C.A.F. as an aero-engine mechanic in 1941 and served as an air gunner during WWII from 1943 - 1945. Following his war service he left the Force and co- founded the Panuke Motor Company Ltd with brothers Lawrence and Fred. Cecil re-enlisted in 1949 and retired from the R.C.A.F. in 1972 earning numerous awards throughout his service including the Europe Star, France and Germany Clasps, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer War Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration. He was an active member of Middleton Baptist Church serving at various times as trustee, deacon and usher. He was a life member of the Wilmot Garden Club and shared the N.S.A.G.C. gardener of the year award along with his wife (Grace) in 1984. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kingston Branch 98. He married Rowena (Grace) Illsley in 1953. He is survived by daughters Linda (John) Lunney, Carringbah, N.S.W. | 472 | CHIPMAN, Dorothy 'Lynn' — 50, of Coldbrook. Our loving and thoughtful wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to all, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer. Lynn grew up in Hants Border, Kings Co. She attended Horton District High School and graduated from the stenography program at Kingstec Campus in 1980. Lynn worked at Acadia University for 33 years and became Senior Network Analyst of The Department of Technology Services in 1997, then Supervisor of Information systems in 2008, and Manager in 2009. During her working career, Lynn studied part time and received her Certificate in Business in 1992 and Diploma in 1993. She obtained her Certificate in Computer Science in 1998, and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2007 from Acadia University. Lynn loved to travel. Her most recent trip was to Disneyworld, Florida last spring with her daughter, granddaughter and spouse. Lynn selflessly gave to others. She volunteered with Big Brothers & Big Sisters and raised money for breast cancer, as well as ran several marathons, including Run for the Cure. Lynn was an avid squash player, and was President of The Kings County Squash Club in 2010 and 2011. She loved playing guitar, gardening, decorating, frenchy shopping, and spending time with family and friends. Lynn especially enjoyed Sunday suppers, holidays and birthdays with family at her Mother’s house. Lynn will be remembered for her beautiful smile, disposition, and her kindness to others. He worked for Brookfield Lumber for over 20 years and later worked nights at Walmart, Truro. Dennis loved his car, always keeping it washed and clean. He enjoyed singing country songs and dancing. | 475 | CHITTICK, Donald Raymond — 85, peacefully passed away with family by his side Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born July 2, 1927, in Sheet Harbour, he was a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Naugler) and James Frederick Chittick. Donald joined the Bank of Nova Scotia after high school in Sheet Harbour. He went on as branch manager in Halifax, Windsor, Ont. and Barrie, Ont. He travelled Canada wide as a bank inspector and worked at the head office in Toronto for the last 17 years of his career. Donald was an active member of the community in Barrie; a social activist; president of several charitable organizations; spearheaded the first neighbourhood watch program in Barrie; lobbied for the CN VIA Rail commuters program from Barrie to Toronto; and while the president of Barrie’s Red Cross division, he developed the first emergency preparedness plan for The County of Simcoe which was later implemented for the rest of Ontario. After retiring, he took a keen interest in Genealogy and traced his Chittick \'Irish\' roots in detail. Donald was a member of the Masons Eureka Lodge No. 42 at Sheet Harbour and recently received his 55year Membership Pin. Donald was an avid curler, cross-county skier and enjoyed family excursions. He never hesitated to drive \'Home\' to Sheet Harbour many summers to visit his parents and siblings. Born in Sheet Harbour on October 31, 1932, he was a son of the late Frederick and Mary (Naugler) Chittick. Leroy worked as a river driver and was an excellent logger in his earlier years; he was employed with Scott Paper Mill for 13 years. Leroy did general contracting, retiring from Mactara as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed playing cards, splitting his wood, and tinkering around the yard. Predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Ramona \'Noan\' Chittick; brothers, Frederick, Raymond, Arnett, Warren, and brother-in-law, Donald Hartling; sister-in-law, Roberta Chittick. Roberta was born in her family home January 6, 1935 in Eureka, Pictou Co. to Annabelle (MacKay) and Alexander Mackenzie. During her youth Roberta’s gifted singing voice and performances were the pride of her parents and local community; after high school Roberta studied nursing and in 1956 graduated from the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. Roberta went on to pursue an illustrious career as a registered nurse with clinical specialties in Maternal Child (Natural Child Birth), Emergency and Geriatrics. A natural leader throughout her career and in her community, Roberta was a pioneer in social activism lending her power, voice, time and efforts toward supporting feminist ideologies. Roberta was the president of the Simcoe County Kiwanis, helped open the MacLaren Art Centre and the Barrier Rape Crisis Centre. Roberta loved gardening, was an avid curler, bridge player and enjoyed taking on an engaged role in political debate and social issues. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late Roland and Joann (Coffill) Spencer (of Hantsport). Lois loved her family and had a good sense of humour. She enjoyed books, poetry, and word games. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in October 1965. As a full time minister for the past 14 years, she loved telling others about her faith in the Creator, Jehovah and his beautiful hope for a future paradise here on earth. Her trust in Jehovah’s promise of the resurrection remained strong right up to the moment she fell asleep peacefully. | 479 | CHURCHILL, EZRA A., merchant, shipbuilder, and politician; b. 1804 at Yarmouth, N.S., to Ezra Churchill and Elizabeth Trefry; d. 8 May 1874 in Ottawa, Ont. Ezra A. Churchill’s father, a mate on a Yarmouth brigantine, was lost with his ship, Hibernia, in 1806, and his mother returned to her home in Hantsport, where she remarried and raised her son. On 10 Nov. 1824 Ezra Churchill married Ann Davidson of Falmouth, N.S., and they had two sons and several daughters. Following the death of his first wife, he married Rachel Burgess of Billtown, N.S., by whom he had four children; only one son lived beyond infancy. Ezra Churchill began his career in Hantsport. In 1841 he bought shares in a small brigantine, and in 1844 he commissioned the building of another brigantine of 128 tons. In the 1850s he bought shares in at least two more vessels and owned the controlling interest in five others. One of these, the 697-ton Morning Star, launched in 1856, was the first ship built by Churchill; it was followed by such large vessels as the 1,138-ton La Gloire, built in 1862, the 1,383-ton Marlborough, built the following year, and the 1,050-ton British America, launched in 1869. Like other vessels built in the province, they were cargo ships with the blunt lines of the work ship rather than the sleek lines of the clipper ships which were designed for speed. Churchill differed from other builders at the time because he left much of the construction to his master builder, Robert Fuller. His yards continued to build smaller vessels suitable for the coastal trade long after other major yards had ceased this practice. At his death, his fleet and yards, among the foremost in the province, were taken over by his two sons, John and George. In the mid–1880s the Churchill yards, like other shipyards in the provinces, began to decline. Churchill, who was obviously interested in the commercial and financial aspects of shipping, became involved with an attempt to establish a new provincial bank. A charter was granted in 1864 by the legislature for the Mutual Bank of Nova Scotia. The project did not develop any further, however, despite the support of the finance minister, Isaac Levesconte, and other prominent Conservative assemblymen including H. A. N. Kaulback of Lunenburg and Peter Smyth of Inverness. In 1855 Churchill was elected to the assembly as the member for Falmouth Township. When this seat was abolished in 1859, he sat as a member for Hants County, North Division, from 1859 until 1867. He was a relatively quiet supporter of the Conservative party but withheld support from Charles Tupper* by abstaining in the 1866 vote on confederation. He did not take part in the 1867 general election but joined with Jeremiah Northup to help elect Joseph Howe in the “better terms” by-election of 1869.
