| 401 | BECKWITH, Esther May — 86, of Wolfville, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011, in Blomidon Court, Greenwich. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late John and Flora (Benedict) Zinck. She was a homemaker most of her life but had been employed for a number of years at Canadian Keyes Fibre, Hantsport. She was a former member of the Lockhartville Sewing Circle and the Lockhartville Women’s Institute. She was a charter member of the Minas Waves Seniors Club in Lockhartville and a past member of Silver and Gold Seniors Club in Wolfville. She was a member of Wolfville Ridge United Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Beckwith; infant son, Eben; daughter, Lois Lunn; son, Samuel; grandson, Wayne Beckwith; great great-granddaughter, Sophie Porter, in infancy. | 402 | BENEDICT, Alfred Wilson — 87, of Haliburton Place, Windsor, formerly of Mount Denson, Hants Co. We are greatly saddened to announce the passing of our Dad on Saturday, March 27, 2010, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on February 10, 1923 in Falmouth, Hants Co., he was the youngest of 12 children of the late Freeman and Olive (Patterson) Benedict. As a young man, Dad worked on the family farm in Falmouth and worked in the woods logging with the horses he loved and had a great rapport with. Later he owned a trucking business and then went on to carpentry work and finished his working career as a carpenter foreman at CKF Inc. in Hantsport. Dad enjoyed bowling for many years on a team with his son, Dean, loyal nephew, Marshall Benedict and friends from work. He also loved to play horseshoes in the summer and later on to washer toss. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs. Alfred resided in Haliburton Place in Windsor for the last two years where he made many friends. Alfred was predeceased by his wonderful wife of 57 years, the former Stella Greenough (2002); son, Terry Richard in infancy; brothers, Lawson, Clarence, Eustace, and Everett; sisters, Flora, Mabel, Eva, Lena, Verna, Thelma and Rita. | 404 | BENEDICT, Paul Avery Paul Benedict, of Meadows Road, Sydney Forks, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2015, in the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, with family at his side. Paul was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Bertha; parents, Russell and Emily Benedict, Hantsport; stepmother, Cathella Benedict, Hantsport; brothers, Russell Jr., Donald, Robert and Austin; sisters, Mary and Gertie; and granddaughter, Nancy Nicole Benedict. Moving to Sydney Forks in 1953, Paul enjoyed the camaraderie of his co-workers for 38 years at Municipal Ready Mix. He gave the same care and attention to his heavy equipment as he did the draft horses he worked in the fields, orchards and forests of the Annapolis Valley. Paul will be remembered as a patient and kind father, loyal husband, family member and good neighbour. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends near home and in Florida. | 405 | BENEDICT, Robert Burton Age 77, a lifelong resident of Mount Denson, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, April 4, 2020. He was a son of the late Robert and Elsie (Moore) Benedict. Bobby was a well-known carpenter who mastered his skills at the early age of 17 and continued his craft until his retirement. | 406 | Bernard “Bunny” Coolen passed away suddenly at Victoria General Hospital, Victoria, British Columbia on September 17, 2006 at the age of 86 years. Born in Fox Point, Nova Scotia, Bunny served with the Royal Canadian Engineers overseas for five years during World War II as a heavy equipment operator which he turned into his first career, post WWII, building highways, clearing orchards and digging many building foundations. Following a career as a high-pressure welder, he spent many years as a boilermaker with HMC Dockyard in Halifax. Living and raising his family in the community where he was raised, Bunny was well-known and would lend a hand to anyone that needed it. He was very close with his family, enjoyed the outdoors and had a desire to always improve things. In 1988, after retirement, Bunny and his wife Kate relocated to the Comox Valley, British Columbia where he enjoyed gardening and visiting with friends and family. | 410 | Betty Lou CROOKE — Valley Of Valley. With sad hearts we share that our beloved Mother has completed her life’s journey, June 13, 2023 at the age of 91. Betty was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents, Hamilton and Susan (Ayer) Morris, Hantsport; husband, Kenneth Crooke; infant daughter, Elizabeth; sister, Barbara; brother, Claude; loved son-in-law, Jim Brown; and companion, Lyle Fisher. Mom loved picnics at the beach, bird watching (particularly morning doves), scouting out treasures at yard sales and secondhand stores. She was an avid collector of cranberry glass, white porcelain cats, cups and saucers and “ladies”. An accomplished flower arranger for every occasion, decorator, seamstress, baker, social organizer, shop owner, bed and breakfast owner, a proud volunteer. The last few years she rediscovered knitting and many were gratefully stocked with her colourful dishcloths. Sweets were her favourite part of the meal and she could sense a bakeshop anywhere. A 5 o’clock glass of Dubonnet was always welcomed with a smile. Mom was strong willed and a doer. Mom met health and life challenges in her later years head on with strength and tenacity. We will forever admire her strength. Respecting Mom’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. | 411 | BEVIN (Starratt), Audrey Agatha Age 88, of Dartmouth, passed away on January 20th, 2014 in Ocean View Manor. Born in Hantsport on April 8th 1925, she was a daughter of Inez Mabel Benjamin and Elwin Ashley Starratt (of Hantsport). Audrey was one of eight children, she moved to Halifax at the age of 16 and met John Charles Bevin and they had 11 children and raised one grandson. Audrey was a vibrant, generous, dynamic spirit; she embraced every aspect of life and lived it to the fullest with unfailing optimism and energy. Audrey’s kind spirit was felt by all, she touched so many lives with her kindness and unwavering help to those in need. She will always be remembered for the devotion that she had for her family. Audrey truly loved music that she professionally recorded over 100 songs and was taught to play the guitar by her son-in-law, Phillip Blackburn. She enjoyed volunteering, playing her songs to other seniors, knitting, sewing, crafting, bingo, travelling with the Dartmouth Seniors Center and was well-known for her cooking and baking bread. | 413 | BISHOP, Thomas Bernard \'Bernie\' — Age 68, of Lower Sackville, passed away February 6, 2011, in Cobequid Medical Centre. Born in Windsor, and raised in Hantsport, he was a son of the late Richard Bishop Sr. and Florence (McPhee). Bernie worked as a salesman in the flooring industry for over 40 years, beginning with Ottawa Valley Lumber (Canfor) and retiring from Centura in 2003. In recent years, he worked periodically for Enviro Master’s Lawn Care and at the time of his death was an instructor with New Bridge Academy hockey school. Besides his work, his passion was his family and hockey. He began his hockey career in his hometown and played competitively at the junior, intermediate and senior league levels throughout the province. For the past 35 years, Bernie played recreational hockey for numerous local teams. He was proud to be a member of the USA Michigan Sting, helping them win numerous national championships. In 2008 he organized a Halifax \'Old Timers\' team. As their player/coach, Bernie led the hometown team to a world championship. He coached minor hockey in Kentville and later with the Sackville Minor Hockey Association, where he also served as an executive member of the Sackville Jr. \'B\' Blazers. Bernie’s enthusiasm for the sport was passed on to his three sons who all played junior hockey. In the mid 1970’s he ventured into the harness racing world. His prized horse, Midnight Glib, set track records at Sackville Downs and Foxborough, Mass. As a \'grampy\', he received immense joy from the time spent with his precious grandchildren, especially around the family pool. | 417 | Bobbi Lynn Bezanson of Hantsport, went to sleep peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Friday, November 3, 2023. She is survived by her family, as well as so many others that loved her. Her sense of humor, laughter and caring nature will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She had a deep love of nature, and animals of all kinds. She was an amazing mother and very proud of her boys. Along with her parents, she was the face of Grand Meadows Stables for many years. Saying she was devoted to her students would be an understatement, her students were her pride and joy. Her career took her all over the world, and her style of teaching brought many awards and accolades, making her well known in the equestrian world. After the sale of Grand Meadows, she continued to teach and mentor her students at Paloosa Ridge Stable with her long-time friend and student Loretta Buchanan. She knew that each student was meant for success, whether in the show ring or just in life. Although we cannot mention all of her students by name, her love for them was apparent and no doubt touched them and left a lasting impression. | 425 | BOYD, Hugh Benjamin Age 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, peacefully at home. Born in Nova Scotia, he graduated with a degree in maritime science/business administration. Known by many as the “Cap’n”, he helped build and sail the replica HMS Bounty for nearly 40 years. He enjoyed canoe/kayak racing, long-distance running, hiking, and climbing mountains. He was also a classically-trained pianist and taught himself the accordion and bagpipes. He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Ruby and Tom Boyd Sr.; his stepmother, Effie; and wife of over 50 years, Sharon Dewar Boyd. He will be sorely missed by family and friends who will never forget his gentle, kind demeanor, his generosity, and his easy smile. There will be a private family service. Rest in peace dear Daddy. Born in Windsor, Michael was the second son of Eric and the late Margaret (Smith) Boyd. He was a graduate of Acadia University and the University of Toronto, Trinity College. Ordained as a priest of The Anglican Church of Canada in 1976, Michael served parishes in Digby, French Village and Hantsport, retiring in July 2012 after serving St. Andrew’s Parish in Hantsport for 31 years. Michael had a great love for his family, Anglican liturgy, choral and organ music, movies and summer sojourns in Petite Riviere. Born July 28, 1923, in Westport, she was a daughter of the late Dean and Grace (Gammon) Pugh. Helena was a graduate of Normal School and taught school for many years in Nova Scotia. She was active in church life wherever she lived, including United and Baptist churches. Helena was active as a Leader of CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training). She was an avid hockey and baseball fan, having played baseball in her younger years. Helena was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and daughter. Besides her parents, Helena was predeceased by her first husband, Victor \'Raymond\' Dorey; second husband, John \'Jack\' Boyle; son, Gregory Dorey (2009); brothers, Allan and William Pugh. | 429 | BRADLEY, FREDA WINNIFRED Freda Winnifred Bradley, 63, Halifax & Dartmouth, most recently of Enfield, passed away Friday, October 19, 2007 in the VG Site, QEII. Born May 31, 1944 in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Hubert and Anne Ruth Doody. Freda attended Dalhousie University and obtained her BA in 1965 and later worked at Baycrest Jewish Home For The Aged in Toronto. She later graduated with her Masters from the Maritime School of Social Work in 1980. In the Halifax area, she worked at the Department of Community services and later at the Department of Mental Health at the Nova Scotia Hospital as well as at Bedford Sackville Mental Health Clinic. Freda had worked for the department of Mental Health for 20 years during which time she was very socially active in her community as well as championing many social causes on a broader scale as head of the social Action Committee within the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers, having served as vice and then later president of NSASW, working for equality and improving the life of those less fortunate and being the voice of those in need. Freda retired after 20 years of work in the Mental Health field. After her retirement, as well as during her tenure, she devoted much of her time to such causes and was a member of many groups for Social Action and change. She made many dear friends through this journey of devotion and compassion. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Arthur Edward Cornwall, who was a notable turn of the century photographer in the Hantsport area. Interment in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. | 431 | Brandon Jeremy West, age 28, of Lockhartville, Kings County, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at home. Brandon was an electrician by trade and was employed with Northumberland Electric at the Michelin plant in Waterville. Brandon’s greatest passion was motocross. He was often seen out on his bike with his buddies doing what he loved most. He rode that bike with such ease and no fear. He felt free from everything when he was on his bike. He raced with the Atlantic Motocross community for several years and was always a fierce competitor and was successful in winning titles over the years. Brandon was so proud of the home he had purchased a few years back and he put a lot of hard work and sweat into making it his home. Brandon attended LE Shaw, Horton and NSCC. During this time he played soccer, softball, hockey and racing motocross. He built many lifelong friendships with his school, motocross and sport friends who will miss him greatly. Brandon grew up on a farm and loved the farming way of life. He loved animals. At home he had chickens, ducks, fish and especially his beloved cat Finn. Brandon will be remembered by many for his infectious and beautiful smile and his loving and carefree spirit. Born in Mount Denson, on June 30, 1929 to Hugh and Hazel MacKinlay (Palmer), she was the last surviving member of her immediate (sister Phyllis and brother Hugh) family. | 434 | BROOK, Capt. Claude Henry Age 90 of Wolfville, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by loving members of his family. Born on June 9, 1929 in Fullerton, Wherwell, England, he was the son of the late John Stacey and Mabel Laura (Foot) Brook. His early years were spent in a farming community in Berkshire, England. After finishing school, he went to naval college and sailed in the Merchant Marine. Claude married his beloved wife, Christina Joyce on December 22, 1951 and emigrated to Canada in June 1957, landing in Quebec City, Que. He worked on the Great Lakes until December 1960 and then moved his family to Saint John, N.B. to serve as an officer on a dredge working in the harbor there. In December 1961 he moved to Dartmouth and joined the Royal Canadian Navy becoming a commissioned officer in 1964. Transferred to the Cornwallis Naval Training Centre in 1966, he bought a farm in Bear River, returning to his farming roots. He resigned from the Navy in 1969 and joined the Fundy Gypsum Company sailing the gypsum ships out of Hantsport. Claude ended his working life as a member of the Atlantic Pilotage Authority first at Port Hawkesbury then in Sydney and retiring from his position in 1990 while living in Maces Bay near Saint John, N.B. | 435 | BROOKE (Wellwood), Harriett Joyce — Passed away in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on January 26, 2011. She was born on July 15, 1934 in Windsor. Family moved frequently and schooling was in Windsor, Liverpool, Montreal, and Fairview. Graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School, Halifax. Worked casually from an early age, including ACA, New Minas, Simpson’s, Halifax, one year contact in Labrador with US Air Force. Moved to Toronto in 1957 and joined the Canadian Gas Association, a national association representing all facets of the Canadian gas industry and including a Certification Laboratory for gas appliances, equipment and apparatus (a CSA equivalent) and a Gas Research Laboratory. Over the next 40 years ending as Vice-President, Member Services and Corporate Secretary. For 12 years, served as the Secretariat with CGA, chairing Technical Committees of the World Gas Association, an organization of 46 member countries. Meetings held twice yearly sponsored by the member countries in Europe and other countries, and work culminated every three years in a World Gas Conference of some 4000 delegates from around the world. Following retirement from Canadian Gas Association in 2000, Joyce moved back to Hantsport, where most of her family members grew up. Married to Robert Gordon Brooke of 40 years (deceased in 2000); and her stepson, Robert W. Brooke (deceased at age 43). Joyce wanted to particularly thank her siblings, their spouses, nieces and nephews for their love and support, friends in Hantsport, and many business associates from across Canada and in other countries that she traveled to, for their support, kindness and for the many fond memories she had during a long lifetime. Joyce was a lover of all things in nature - particularly bird habits and their songs. Joyce was always willing to contribute to local churches and charitable organizations in town. Joyce loved gourmet cooking and delighted many people throughout her life with the many wonderful meals and desserts she so lovingly prepared. She was grateful to friends in Hantsport and her mother’s siblings. | 436 | BROOKS (Taylor), Marion It is with great sadness we announce her unexpected passing, Tuesday, August 11, 2015, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in 1928 in Greenwich, she was a daughter of the late Vaughan and Grace (Anderson) Taylor (Hantsport). She was predeceased by her husband, Bob Brooks. Marion cherished the beauty of the Annapolis Valley and memories of growing up in Hantsport where she was an Apple Blossom Princess. She thoroughly enjoyed her profession as lab technologist, working in Point Edward, Yarmouth, and Halifax (VGH). Marion belonged to IODE for many years (Leif Erikson Chapter, Yarmouth, Marquis of Rockingham, Halifax) and served as Brownie leader in Yarmouth. In her pastime she played in various bridge clubs and continued to cook and try new recipes. Travel was a very important part of her life and she loved the many experiences it afforded. The cottage and close friends at Lake Annis meant the world to her and she considered one of the best places to be was sitting on the veranda by the lake with the hummingbirds buzzing by. Marion was known for her kindness, generosity and creativity and people marveled at her constant good nature. She will be so missed. | 438 | BROTHERS, Lorne Douglas Age 74, of Hantsport, passed away peacefully Friday, May 26, 2017 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Lorne was born in Windsor on May 6, 1943 and was a son of the late Clarence \'Dub\' and Evelyn (Hatfield) Brothers. Besides his parents, Lorne was predeceased by his brother, Frank. Lorne was strongly committed to the profession of banking. He had a broad background in both Independent Business and Corporate Banking. He retired in 2002, as manager of the Royal Bank Financial Group, Saint John Business Banking Centre. Lorne was also dedicated and enthusiastic in his long support of various organizations, including Mindcare New Brunswick, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kinsmen Club and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Avon United Church, Hantsport Town Council and Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. Lorne lived each day to the fullest; his zest for life evident as he literally \'whistled while he worked\', whether it was washing his car, taking care of his yard and property or puttering in the kitchen. He was happiest at home doing things he loved, including reading historical novels, baking bread, trying new recipes, watching old westerns, sitting in front of the fire and doing his daily crosswords. Time spent with his grandchildren made Lorne’s eyes twinkle and the enthusiasm he had for life made others just want to be in his company. Lorne’s positive outlook on life was an inspiration to those around him. Lorne will always be remembered for his warm hand shake, big heart, and kindness and compassion shown to others. He was a great listener and giver of good advice. But none will compare to the fierce pride and love in his heart for his family. Lorne and Wendy shared 50 years of marriage. Their life together was played out as a team. They were partners in everything that life offered. They worked together to provide a home filled with love and laughter for not only their children and grandchildren, but for all who entered. Together, they were the anchor of their family. Lyle was a hardworking farmer most of his life, and a heavy equipment operator. Lyle showed his love for people through his smile and caring ways. He was a loving, caring husband and father. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was predeceased by brothers, Eldon and Dawson; sister, Darlene. A funeral service will take place in Hantsport Baptist Church Friday, February 8, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Fred Sisco and Rev. Sharon Rivest. Burial will take place in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Born on August 23, 1917, she was a daughter of the late John and Maude (Boyd) Akin. Margaret was a lifelong resident of Falmouth and spent the last four years at Windsor Elms Village. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas, (formerly of Isle Magee, North Ireland) in whose arms may she be dancing once again. She was also predeceased by sisters, Mary, Kathryn, Elizabeth and Sadie; brothers, Albert, Godfrey, Charles and William \'Bill\'; daughter-in-law, Gloria (Miner) Browne; sister-in-law, Bessie Akin.
