Age 82 , of Hantsport, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by family. Born October 31, 1931 in Hantsport, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Captain Charles and Florance (Fields) Barkhouse. She was happily employed at CKF Inc. Hantsport for over 30 years. She was pre­deceased by her partner, Grant Folker (1992); and son, David; brother, Charles \'Bub\' Barkhouse; half-brothers, Fred (Sarah), John (Effie), Cecil (Jean), and George (Charlotte) Scott; sister, Susie (Ralph) Starratt; brothers-in-law, Ivan Oickle and Bert Willigar.

David married Alene May Lockhart on 5 Nov 1943 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Alene (daughter of David Henry Perry Lockhart and Lillian Amelia Hughes) was born on 11 Sep 1924 in Avonport, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 17 Aug 2021 in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Alene “May” Stevens, 96 of Hantsport at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor on August 17, 2021. Born in Avonport on Sept. 11, 1924, She was the daughter of the late David and Lillian (Hughes) Lockhart and the youngest child of 14. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mom met her husband of almost 60 years, Dave, while in nurse’s training in Yarmouth. She moved to Hantsport in 1943 and Dad followed after WWII.

She worked at CKF for 30 years and made many friends along the way.

Mom was a member of Helping Hand Rebekah Lodge and Past Nobel Grands for over 60 years. She was a past secretary for the Windsor and District Labour Council, Local 576 Union and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. She was also a Guide Commissioner with the Canadian Girl Guides and Brownies in Hantsport.

Mom loved to knit things for her family members and was famous for her homemade socks. Some of them even went in care packages for the troops overseas. She baked almost every day, donating to the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Hantsport for their suppers and bake sales. Her pies would fetch a pretty penny and she loved to give them to family and neighbors. She enjoyed bowling in the Hantsport Ladies League for many years. She loved to watch curling, baseball and hockey and especially enjoyed going to baseball games to watch her son-in-law, her grandson and then her great-grandson play and to hockey to watch her great-grandson play. Many of these overnight trips, the boys would love to sit and listen to her many stories of the days of old. They were astonished by every last detail.

She was predeceased by her husband Dave, sons Bill and Geoff, daughter Sandy Dunbar, sons-in-law Dave Best and Chuck Rogers.

She was also predeceased by her five brothers, Otto, Gladwin, David, Will and Stewart and 8 sisters Mildred, Grace, Ella, Lillian, Hester, Edna, Jenny and Effie.

Donations in her memory may be made to HMCC Baseball Program, Hantsport Fire Department or a charity of your choice.

We would like to thank the staff of Shoreham Village and Dykeland Lodge for the care they gave to mom during her stay.

As per her wishes, Mom’s body has been donated to Dalhousie Department of Neuroscience.

A Celebration of Life service will be held from Monday August 23, 2021 from 2 pm to 4pm at the Hantsport Baptist Church, 6 Willow Street, Hantsport, N. S. Please bring your mask and abide social distancing guidelines.

Burial will be at a later date.

One of Last Schooner Captains Dies at 92 Hantsport - Capt. Charles Foster Barkhouse died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ivan Oickle at Hantsport. He was 92. He was one of Nova Scotia's last schooner captains. Born at Medford, Kings County, Capt. Barkhouse was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Barkhouse. He lived in Hantsport most of his life. He was a sea captain for 44 years and worked for 22 years as an engineer with the Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company. He was a member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church. During his career at sea he was shipwrecked four times. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Scott of Avonport; one son Charles, Hantsport; four daughters, Mrs. Ralph Harris, Hantsport; Mrs. Bert Willigar, Parrsboro; Mrs. Fred Best, Hantsport; and Mrs. Ivan Oickle,, Hantsport; four stepsons George, John and Cecil, all of Hantsport, and Fred Scott in California; one sister, Mrs. John Burns, Canning; a half brother, Leonard, Kentville, a half sister Effie (Mrs. George Bennett), Steen Mills, Kings County, and 19 grandchildren. The body is at Lindsay's Funeral Home, Windsor. Funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Church, Rev. Bordon Pyke officiating. Burial will be in Hantsport Cemetery.

Charles married Florence Matilda Fields. Florence (daughter of Frederick A. Fields and Caroline Henwood) was born in Mar 1900 in Avonport, Kings, Nova Scotia; died on 26 Nov 1971 in PM Hospital, Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia; was buried in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia. Mrs. Charles Barkhouse, 71, of Hantsport, Kings County, died Friday in Payzant Memorial Hospital, Windsor. Born in Avonport, Kings County, she was the former Florence Hilda Fields, a daughter of the late Fred and Caroline (Henwood) Fields. She was predeceased by her first and second husbands. She is survived by five sons, John Scott, Cecil Scott, And George Scott, all of Hantsport; Fred Scott, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Charles Barkhouse, Edmonton, Alta.; four daughters, Susie (Mrs. Ralph Starrett), Eileen (Mrs. Fred Best), and Maud (Mrs. Ivan Oickle), all of Hantsport; and Jessie (Mrs. Bert Willeger), Parrsboro; three sisters, Mary (Mrs. George Colby) and Mandy (Mrs. Edward Pinch), both of Hantsport; and Frances (Mrs. Roy Margeson), Kentville; one brother, Joseph, Hantsport; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The body is at the Lohnes Funeral Home, Windsor. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m., in St. James United Church, Hantsport, with Rev. J.D. Archibald officiating. Burial will be in Riverbank cemetery, Hantsport.
