Died:
WELT, William Edgar — Of Greenwich, Kings Co. With sadness, I announce the passing of my beloved husband, Bill, age 87, in the Veterans’ Wing of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Bill was a truly gentle man, happy to be with his family and friends. He loved playing the bagpipes, marched in many parades and ceremonies and was highly respected by the members of his band. Bill was a son of Milton Edgar and Pearl (Drolet) Welt. He grew up in the mining town of Schumacher near Timmins, Ont. and took his schooling there. In 1942 he joined the Army, coming to Wolfville, where he took the Officer’s Training Course at Acadia University. He went overseas in 1943, joined the North West Novas and fought in Holland and Belgium until the end of the Second World War. He played the drums in the Victory Parade in Brussels and Amsterdam. Bill started work in engineering/designing with the Ontario Department of Highways in Toronto and later was transferred to Albuquerque, N.M., and finally settled in Tucson, Ariz. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty, of 50 years. For several years, with his second wife, Margaret Forsyth Welt, he spent six winter months in Tucson and six summer months in Nova Scotia, and joined friends in bagpipe bands in both places. In 2007, he settled on the farm in Greenwich, and treasured the longtime friendships made with the CAUC (Canadian Army University Course) and his family here. Funeral service will be held in Greenwich United Church on Tuesday, November 22, at 3 p.m. with reception to follow in the church; Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt will officiate.
Family/Spouse: Margaret Edna Gertrude Harvie. Margaret (daughter of Leland Benjamin Harvie and Zella Leah Hudson) was born on 22 May 1926 in Hantsport, Hants, Nova Scotia; died on 3 Jul 2013 in Greenwich, Kings, Nova Scotia; was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville, Nova Scotia.
